I bought this buckle 45 years ago in a junk store near my boyhood home in Shenandoah County, Va. Any idea if it is authentic?

Unfortunately with these hooks it would be a reproduction I believe. Possibly around the centennial. These plates were originally shoulder plates with different backs. I can post a photo of the books when I get home if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Thank you. I am not a collector, but I wish it was real, of course.
I wish it was real too, that would be one hell of a find. See what others might say, I'm the insignia guy so someone more specialized in buckles and plates will probably stop by. Check through the forum in the search menu to see if this buckle has been covered in an older post. If you want to ask a particular person use the @ and then their name to alert them.

I bought this one at the same time 45 years ago. Probably a reproduction as well. I polished it then and wore it as a belt buckle when I was a teenager. 🙂View attachment 490247

Pretty cool. I agree with above, 20th Century. I would suggest these are likely custom plates for centennial reenactor clubs.

THere was a 1st Virginia Volunteers reenactment club at Norfolk in the centennial:

There was a 17th Virginia Infantry reenactor club in Alexandria, VA in the earl 1960s...
