NF 1950's NPS Tour Booklets

I just returned home from a visit to my local barber (antique collector). Tom gave me four 1950's mint condition National Park Service tour booklets to the Harper's Ferry, Manassas, Gettysburg and Chickamauga American Civil War sites.

The Harper's Ferry and Chickamauga booklets were free. The Manassas and Gettysburg booklets cost .25 cents.

I collect NPS brochure - maps from every venue I visit around the United States of America.

The maps and information included in the brochures are priceless.

What a great gift from your Barber! I have and enjoy several of theses publications too, especially the one identical to your Gettysburg edition. I also collect centennial and bi-centennial books published by local communities. They all have interesting histories, accounts, photographs and advertisements in them.

Back in the 1950's and 60's in addition to getting all the brochures and Historical Handbooks from the sites I visited, I also received lists in the mail from the U.S. Government Printing Office who published all of them. I ordered all the NPS publications for historic sites I didn't get to visit until many years later, like (then) Custer Battlefield and Saratoga.

Interesting to note that at least Frederick Tilberg's Gettysburg underwent revision about the time of the Centennial. A portfolio of somewhat primitive paintings of various parts of the battle were added in the new edition and I think a new map that showed revisions to the park driving tour. New titles were also appearing on a somewhat regular basis, I think to coincide with anniversaries of battles and expansion of park land or opening of new visitor centers. One amusing mistake continued in subsequent reprints of the Antietam book however: a photograph of a later Victorian farmhouse was incorrectly identified in the caption as the Phillip Pry House, probably because it was located beside a marker Pry House with an arrow pointing not to it but down the farm lane leading to the actual Pry House!

I have a number of those stashed from when I was a kid. Made sure to get one for every historic site I visited. I can't say mine are in mint condition.

I collected those when I was young, in the mid 70s. It was our family practice to get one when we visited the site. I had a couple dozen! I gave mine away about 5 years ago. Those covers bring back memories.

But they are not rare and more common than I expected.....
