I was very, very fortunate to be invited to hold, aim, and love on this Springfield. My husband and I were invited to a re-enactment at Phillipston, Mass. a couple of weeks ago by our own @captaindrew. He had a pal there that actually owns this. It's history was verified by Springfield Armory. It was on the Federal side, got captured and used by the Confederates, and then got retaken by the Federals again. It is one of his friend's most treasured possessions. But I have a feeling that as the day gets longer, the gun gets heavier!

You need one of your own... ok, let's be honest you need several. Maybe 6? Tell your pet human it's time for him to buy you an original.

What would one cost? In good condition? I know that they shouldn't be really fired anymore and wouldn't, but I would want one in working condition. @captaindrew you are a bad bad influene in more ways than one!

I will also say, even though I'm firmly a Union gal, my husband and I hung out with the Rebs all day and didn't know they could be so much fun!

Us Rebs aren't so bad are we? :D Hope I haven't been too bad an influence, don't want to be in trouble with Earl. That Springfield is a great conversation starter with the spectators. He sets up a table with that and some other original items for the crowd. I'm not sure how he acquired it or how he researched it's history but he's a good knowledgeable guy and take his word for it. He actually does fire it occasionally at living histories and parades but never takes it in the field.

I have yet to pay more than $1000 for any one of my young ladies. I've seen many various ACW arms in good shooting condition from the $850-$1500 range. I've pasted several links below of reputable dealers.

You just need to tell your husband it is an investment in his future. Should he ever irritate you so much he needs to be shot by giving you a muzzle loading rifle he would be setting himself up for a sporting chance.

Now that's true! I went to a black powder jamboree last weekend and the musket assigned to me (they told me) shot high so the first time I missed the target. The second was in the target but more of a shoulder wound:rolleyes:. Now skeet shooting - that's a different matter! I'm very good at that:wink:.

Giving a woman a shotgun... That's just downright unsporting.

Upon enlarging the photo a bit, the musket in the OP is a mixed parts gun. It is a M-1864 Springfield, with a M-1861 barrel and hammer. Considering the time frame the M-1864 Springfield was issued, the issuing, capture, and recapture would have had to happened rather quickly. Because there are no serial numbers on U.S. Muskets of that era I rather doubt that the Springfield Armory verified anything. Unless there are personalized period carvings in the stock identifying it to a Southern soldier and recapture documentation.

I just don’t know anymore about it than what I was told. But.... it was a fun day and he loves that piece and I enjoyed it greatly.

Oh I’m just remembering there were two cartouches on the stock but I didn’t think to take pictures of them.

There was a story behind the mixed parts but I forget all the details. I'm back in Fl. now and won't see those guys again for a while. I'll try and get a hold of him and find out. It is a pretty cool piece. I too don't know how he knows the whole story behind it, it is quite a story, but being I'm not buying it I'll take his word for it. I do know he's had it to the Springfield Armory, those guys regularly do some living history stuff there. Their group is based in that area.
