An interesting story. During my first year teaching in this particular school - I was classroom neighbors with a guy, who - come to find out, had grown up with my dad. I never put his last name together, and he never put mine. He retired after that year but we became pretty close. I bounced a lot of thoughts about the education system off of him. After a while he realized who I was and we developed a fairly close bond.
Last August, he started talking to me about different things I had that were Civil War related. He asked if I have a rifle. Being an artillery reenactor, I told him no. He knew I had put on programs and did a lot of different things in my off time. He told me he was going to buy me one. It was in passing, and I shrugged it off.
The first week of August last, he shows up at my door - mind you I live an hour away from where I teach. He has a long box. He shows me this beautiful 1862 Springfield, complete with papers - and its in better condition that most pieces I've seen in museums. Complete with the bayonet. He was on the school board at the time - so I kept it quiet. He told me not to worry about it as he didn't have any kids and he wanted to give me something that I would enjoy and use to help educate others. I think he knew something was going to happen - he passed away suddenly this spring.
Needless to say - this is a treasure. We are in the process of moving to a new home - it will have its own special case before too long.
