I picked up an 1861 dated Springfield. Both the lock plate and barrel are dated 1861, although the barrel date is a little less distinct. It is in very nice condition, with an excellent bore. There is a block "F" stamped into the stock about 2" forward of the trigger guard. Does anyone have an educated guess as to what the meaning of this mark might be?
Here are a few more photos of the Springfield. I used my cell phone, so the photos are not great. Unfortunately the area of the barrel date and proof marks has been cleaned rather harshly, IMO, and the barrel date is now faint, but it is there.
One more photo, please. Need to see the rear sight, to see if it's an early one {rare} or a latter one.. There is a significant difference in the value.

Thank you all for the kind responses and the information. The "F" mark in the stock is interesting, and I am curious as to whether anyone else has the same mark on the stock of their musket. As John said, it is great to hold a piece of history in your hands.

Very nice piece and becoming more valuable by the day, these were harshly used and yours is in very good condition and looks completely original. Very nice bore as well, a piece to be proud of!
