He was cousin of Jefferson Davis and Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor.

Edit - Both of these are correct answers.

Two days after his resignation from the U.S. Senate in January 1861, Davis was appointed a major general in the Army of Mississippi by Governor Pettus.

Although he gave up that position before Civil War hostilities actually started to assume his duties as POTCS, the question asked only for a general, not a general of the Confederate States Army or a general who served as such during the Civil War. Therefore, Davis is correct.

Jones was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina. By his marriage to Sarah Taylor, daughter of Brig. Gen. Joseph Pannell Taylor, he was a nephew of Zachary Taylor, the 12th US President, and a cousin of Jefferson Davis and Richard Taylor. On April 8, 1864, Taylor was promoted to lieutenant general.
In an interesting twist on brother against brother, these were son-in-law against father-in-law and nephew against uncle: Joseph Pannell Taylor (May 4, 1796 – June 29, 1864) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the American Civil War. He was the younger brother of Zachary Taylor.
