The 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry might be the most interesting Confederate regiment that has never been written about.

You may already know that the first commander of the 16th Georgia was Colonel Howell Cobb (later Brig Gen.) and, let's face it, Cobb has a pretty colorful story himself! :bounce: You might know that the 16th Georgia was part of Longstreet's Corps in Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia - and everybody knows about Longstreet and Lee. :smile coffee: During this presentation, you'll learn the lesser known history of this regiment and hear the stories of some of its members.

  • Why did the regiment arrive in Richmond in June/July 1861 but didn't leave Richmond until mid October?
  • What is unusual about how they were outfitted with firearms?
  • Why was Howell Cobb unable to command at the Battle of Antietam?
  • Who commanded the Brigade after TRR Cobb was mortally wounded behind the stone wall at Fredericksburg? Ill give you a hint: It wasn't William Tatum Wofford.
  • How did two members of the regiment die near the PA/New York State line (when there was no prison or battle there.)
  • What connection does the team of comedians "Laurel and Hardy" have to the regiment?
  • Why were charges preferred against the Division commander for court martial?
  • How many times was the regiment transferred into and out of the service of the Army of Northern Virginia? And in what other Confederate Army(s) did they serve?
To learn the answers to these questions and more, you are invited to attend either or both of two upcoming presentations:

7 pm Thursday, November 3 at Sons of Confederate Veterans, Camp #97, Oconee County Veterans Memorial Park, Senior Center Auditorium, 3500 Hog Mountain Rd, Watkinsville, GA 30677.

7 pm Monday, November 21 at Gwinnett Historical Society, Historic Gwinnett County Courthouse, Lawrenceville, Ga.

Sorry I am late getting this posted. Laura we greatly enjoyed your presentation earlier this month. I hope it wasn't too much trouble driving to Watkinsville from your home in Alabama.

We hope this was the first visit of many to be with us at the General TRR Cobb SCV Camp # 97.
