There are all kinds of histories online and in libraries and archives which tell the stories of regiments. Some states put out books after the War with a write up for each regiment. Some soldiers published memoirs describing their personal experiences which are wonderful reading if your ancestor served in the same company or regiment.

His name was John Lovelace Foster.
