The Millen/Camp Lawton POW database contains the name of Private John H Smith listed as Co E of the 15th Illinois. He was sent to Millen on November 11. In Fold3 I found 2 John H Smiths, of whom died 11/22/1909 and is buried in Illinois; the other died 5/15/1925 and is buried in Arkansas. Both findagrave records indicate that the 2 Johns were enlisted in the 15th Illinois. Can anyone shed any light on this? Were there 2 John H Smiths at Andersonville and at Millen? Thanks for any and all input.

The Illinois Muster Rolls show a John J Smith in Company E of the 15th Illinois. He enlisted in May of 1861 at Freeport, Illinois. He was 41 years old and a native of Germany. He mustered out at the end of his three years at Huntsville, Alabama.

John H Smith is listed as having been in Company E of the reorganized 15th Illinois. He joined January 1, 1864 at Cowan, Mississippi. He was originally in Company A, joining that in 1861. He was 24 years old and a native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He mustered out May 30, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois. The record does state that he was a POW.

I'm combining the records for John H Smith for you - Illinois has him twice, once for his original enlistment and once again for his enlistment as a veteran volunteer. That maybe where you are getting the two records from.
