14th OVI Uniform

Hello all,
Been interested in knowing more about the unit I reenact. My big question is did the 14th OVI use OVM belt plates or the US belt plates.
Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum CWcadet.

There is a surviving Ohio breast plate carved with the date "1863" which belonged to G.W. Gates of the 15th Ohio. Based on this it is quite possible the 14th Ohio were issued with OVM buckles. I am sure the 14th Ohio received US oval buckles as the war went on.

Hm. A bit late to this thread, but... my great-great-grandfather was in the 14th. The 14th had two distinct incarnations, once as a three-months' regiment and then as a three-years' regiment. It's possible that the men who joined the 14th in its initial 90 days may have been supplied with OVM buckles and may have kept them for a time even after it was reorganized as a three-years' regiment. Just speculation on my part, though; I haven't seen any photos of my ancestor in uniform to be able to say what he wore.
