John Adams

Edit - Several players, including me, named Adams as the answer to this question, but after further review, I don't believe he is a correct answer, because the question asked for somebody who "fought" on both sides.

The following website (http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/Biographies/BiosJohnAdams.htm) indicates that Adams was promoted to captain in the U.S. Army in 1856 and was assigned to Fort Crook, California in 1858. When his native state of Tennessee seceded, he resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederacy. That took place in May 1861.

If Fort Sumter is considered to be the start of the Civil War, then it appears Adams was serving as a captain in the U.S. Army during the early days of the war. But if he was in California at the time, there were no battles out there in which he could have fought before he switched allegiances.

F. Armstrong...I think it was Frank Armstrong

I believe it was Frank/Fred no, Frank Armstrong

Edit - Correct, TexasAggieRex. Welcome to the trivia game and to CivilWarTalk.

Your answer did come through in post # 9 as well, but I guess you weren't sure that it had, so you repeated it, which is probably a good idea.

If you haven't already done so, you're invited to stop by the New Recruits Meet & Greet forum and introduce yourself to the rest of the CivilWarTalkers.

Frank Crawford Armstrong

From Wikipedia:
"By the time of the Civil War, Armstrong was a captain in the regular army. He led a company of Union cavalry at the First Battle of Bull Run.[4] However, Armstrong resigned his commission and on August 10, 1861, he joined the Confederate Army. [...] In 1863 Armstrong was elected as colonel of the 3rd Louisiana Infantry Regiment, and was soon given command of the cavalry of Major General Sterling Price.[4] Two months later, he was promoted to brigadier general[4] and commanded a cavalry division under Nathan Bedford Forrest at the Battle of Chickamauga"

Lewis Armistead was promoted to Capt. 1855 Union Army and Confederate Brig. General
Lewis Armistead?????

Edit - Armistead, like John Adams, was serving as a U.S. Army captain in California at the start of the war, but resigned as soon as his native state (in Armistead's case, Virginia) seceded, without fighting in any battles on the Union side.
