(a song parody to the tune: "How Much is that Doggie in the Window")

1.
One day as I walked into a firehouse,
Not knowing what was in store.
Soon they would all be my best friends,
and we all would go off to war.

2.
I listened each day for the bugle,
I knew what it meant when it called.
I ran out to do my duty,
and like them I would give my all.

3.
When called I went out to give comfort,
For they were my dearest friends.
And when we were captured by Rebels,
I marched off to Belle Isle Prison.

4.
In 6 months I'd walked out in freedom,
it was such a glorious day.
My messmates gave me something special,
but it was soon taken away.

5.
I no longer fight with my troopers,
t'was their gift a high price I'd paid.
But in my short life, I'll be remembered,
by my friends from Pittsburgh, P-A.

Great question and interesting story!

1. The dog's name was Jack. He was a bull terrier mix.
2. His regiment was the 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry.
3. The regiment raised $75 for a silver collar and medal for Jack. A couple of days later he went missing; it was presumed he was killed because someone wanted the silver collar.

2. 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.
3. He was last seen December 23, 1864. It is thought that a silver collar the men gave him may have attracted thieves who killed him.
