Question: Originally from Ireland, this private in the 6th US Cavalry performed an action at Fairfield, PA on July 3, 1863 for which he was ultimately awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1979, he received the additional distinction of having a bridge renamed in his honor. That bridge is now the longest bridge located entirely within the state of Pennsylvania.

What was his name?

Hint: Prior to being renamed for the Medal of Honor winner, the bridge was named for a Philadelphia avenue whose name is a combination of a writing instrument and a beautiful flower.

George Crawford Platt. This truss bridge is 8,780 feet long, according PennDOT, and carries state Route 291, also known as Penrose Avenue, over the Schuylkill River in southwest Philadelphia. It opened in 1951 and was named in honor of George Crawford Platt, who served as a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for bravery in combat, for protecting the American flag in hand-to-hand combat near Fairfield, Adams County, during the Battle of Gettysburg.
