3. What was reaction of the Confederate Congress? The Confederate Congress voted to impose the death penalty on anyone convicted of counterfeiting Confederate currency.

2. "Facsimile" Confederate notes;
3. Considering him a counterfeiter, the rebel Congress passed law imposing the death penalty on convicted counterfeiters.

2) Counterfeit Confederate money; The notes which sold for a penny each contained a line across the bottom which read "Fac-simile Confederate Note – Sold wholesale and retail by S.C. Upham 403 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia." It was only when cotton traders started trimming off the line and spending the money that the South was flooded with counterfeits.
3) The Confederate Congress made counterfeiting a capital crime and Jefferson Davis put a bounty on S.C. Upham for $10,000 dollars dead or alive.
