This Confederate unit was more than just a regiment. It was known for its Native American soldiers, though it was not exclusively composed of Native American soldiers. It mainly saw service in its home area, though it also was part of Jubal Early's Valley Campaign. It has the distinction of being the last Confederate force to surrender east of the Mississippi River.

Edit - The question asked about the last Confederate force to surrender east of the Mississippi River. While Watie's force surrendered later than Thomas' Legion, the surrender took place in Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma.

The only partially Native unit in the east I spontaneously know is Thomas' Legion, or 69th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. It was led by Col. William H. Thomas, who was Chief but white, being adopted into a Cherokee tribe.

3. Watie was the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, and the only Native American who attained a General rank during the Civil War. Prior to removal of the Cherokee to Indian Territory in the late 1830s, Watie and his older brother Elias Boudinot were among leaders who signed the Treaty of New Echota in 1835. The majority of the tribe opposed their action. In 1839 the brothers were attacked in an assassination attempt, as were other relatives active in the Treaty Party. All but Stand Watie were killed.

I am distantly related to William Holland Thomas through his wife Sarah Love (a distant cousin). The nepotism between him and Sarah's family and the Legion was real , so I have several distant cousins who served in it, including Colonel James Robert Love.

I don't personally own these photos, but here's a photo of Col. Love, as well as a wartime family picture of him and 2 brothers who also served in the Legion. This was apparently taken before their time in the Legion when they were all in the 16th NC. The one not in uniform was a doctor and served as a military surgeon.
