During the war, General George Thomas rode a horse named after a good friend. Who was that friend and what was his horse's name?

credit: @Reconstructed Rebel

Thanksgiving Bonus:
Before the Civil War, one man resigned from the Army to manufacture his own guns only to have his company fail. This same man is then given a railroad job by a friend who was a railroad executive. These men both ended up as Generals together during the Civil War.
Who are these Generals?

Main: Gen. George Thomas friend Gen. William T. Sherman. Billy Sherman the name of the horse.
source: https://buffalonews.com/news/local/...cle_2c237a5d-bdfd-59f2-9314-fda86799660d.html

Bonus: to follow

Edit - The source presented indicates that "Billy Sherman," the horse buried in Wilson, NY, is not the horse that George Thomas rode. "Billy Sherman" belonged to an unnamed Confederate officer. Thomas' horse was simply named "Billy."

George Thomas named his horse "Billy", after his good friend William Tecumseh Sherman.

Ambrose E. Burnside was the failed gunmaker; George B. McClellan was the railroad executive.

First is named after Sherman and named Billy.

Second was Burnside.

Edit - Your first answer is correct, so you get 10 points credit. The bonus question asked for two names, so I can't give credit for your answer to that one.

Burnsides and McClellan

Edit - That's a correct answer to the bonus question, so 10 points credit for you, neyankee61.

A belated welcome to the trivia game. I see you also answered the November 22 question, but I failed at the time to recognize you were a new player.

Hope you'll come back and play again. Note that occasionally we have both a main question and one or more bonus questions on the same date. On such occasions, players get 10 points credit for each question they answer correctly.
