LTC (later MG) Charles Heywood. On January 30, 1891, Heywood was appointed Colonel, Commandant of the Marine Corps. He would serve in this capacity for 12 years, 94 days. During his tenure, the Marine Corps tripled in size and adopted "Semper Fidelis" (Always Faithful) as the official Marine Corps motto. He was the first Marine to hold the rank of Major General. He retired on October 3, 1903, in accordance with law, having attained the age of 64 years. He died eleven years after retiring on February 26, 1915 at the age of 75. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

This Marine participated and saw combat in multiple naval operations during the war including the Battle of the Hatteras Inlet Batteries, Battle of Hampton Roads, Battle of Mobile Bay. He would later go on to become Commandant of the Marine Corps.
