My Fame Was Born On The Waters
(a song parody to the tune: My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean)

1.
My birth was in beautiful Scotland,
and then I came over the sea.
In time I would land in Savannah,
to fight for the Rebel Navy.

Ladies - lined up - to fancy me up for the fight,
brothers - worked hard - to fit my iron just right.

2.
I finally fought in the battles
they thought I would be a star.
But when I was in shallow water,
I landed upon a sand bar.

Blue's my color - never to see me in gray,
Now I'm fighting - for the USA.

3.
Again I am now refitted,
fighting my dearest friends.
I'm hoping this war will be over,
to just float beside river bends.

On the - river - fighting on for fame,
the Yanks - rebuilt me - but never changed my name.

4.
The war was finally over,
but my time was growing short.
In 4 years I'm sold and must sail on,
but I never reached my new port.

Fighting - bravely - the Union I helped save,
but the - ocean - now it is my grave.

The Iron Screw Steamer Fingal; 1861-1864 CSS Atlanta; 1864-1869 USS Atlanta; 1869 Triumfo.
She was built by James & George Thomson, Govan (now part of Glasgow), Scotland for passenger and merchandise service between Glasgow and other Scottish ports.
Purchased from her British owner in September 1861, she was converted to an iron-clad ram in Savannah. She ran aground at Wassaw Sound, Georgia in September 1863 and surrendered to USS Weehawken. Repaired, she was recommissioned USS Atlanta and patrolled the James River supporting operations against Richmond.
At war's end, she was decommissioned in Philadelphia. In May 1869 she was sold to Haiti. In August 1869 she took on a cargo of munitions and left Philadelphia for Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She was lost at sea.

Answer
CSS/USS Atlanta. Rebuilt as a Confederate Ironclad by the brothers - Asa & Nelson Tift and largely financed by the ladies of Savannah - it would be commissioned as the CSS Atlanta and would be captured by the US in June of 1863 and on December 18, 1869 it would vanish en route to Port-au-Prince (being sold off to the government of Haiti). There were no survivors.
