I'll weave a tale of adventure
To tell you of my fame
Despite my noble exploits
There are few who know my name.
Though some say 'tis but fancy,
Just a manufactured story
I served in six great armies
Gaining knighthood and much glory.
When the Southern states seceded
Firing shells at Sumter's wall
I offered up my sword in answer
To the Union's call.
I led men from the Garden State
With boldness and with dash
In battle's heat you'd find me
Furiously twirling my mustache.
My finest hour fighting was
On the field of Brandy Station
My troopers almost won the day
Through sheer determination.
I angered Mosby, calling him
A thief and not a ranger
In my HQ he stole my clothes
And made light of the danger.
Upon war's end I didn't stay
But sailed for India's shore
I tried to run a paper, opera,
A logging firm and more.
I met my end uniquely,
My hot air balloon in flame
But if I'd known the danger
I'd have done it just the same
For I always craved adventure
From my first day to my last
We're not all dull and colorless
We warriors from the past.
Who am I?
