Their were a number of animal mascots in military units during the Civil War. One of the most famous belonged to a Midwestern State regiment that served in the Western theater. The Confederates knew about it and hated it. At the Battle of Corinth Rebel General Sterling Price ordered his men to capture it "as he would rather get that ? than capture a whole brigade of men". Later a rendering of this animal's head became one of the most well known division patches in World War II and beyond.
(1) Name the type of animal

2. The 8th Wisconsin bought it for $2.50, and named themselves The Eagles. Old Abe was with them in over 30 engagements. He died in a fire at age 44, long after the CW.
3. The 101st Airborne was originally part of the Wisconsin National Guard, and took the Eagle as its patch symbol and nickname "Screaming Eagles".

8th Wisconsin with their eagle "old Abe"?

Edit - We normally ask that players put their answers to all parts of the question in their own words, rather than supplying links or pictures, but in this case your answer to the third part of the question is obviously right, so you get credit for a correct response.

Welcome to the trivia game. Hope you'll come back and play again.
