I have seen thousands of sunsets in my time. I am but one of thousands. I did not achieve the stature of the hidden Hyperion, but what I lack in height I make up for in sheer volume. One like me is named for my friend who always stood by me and we now stand together far from the battlefields.

This was tricky because I automatically thought of the General Sherman Sequois but the "what I lack in height" kept throwing me off as well as not knowing a tree had been name after General Grant until I found my answer about 10 pages back in a Google search.

My answer is:

What am I and who was I named for? - I went with trees since "hidden Hyperion" makes me think of the Redwood tree by that name. Looking up the term famous trees, I find the General Sherman Tree in a nearby park with trees named after Grant, Lincoln and Lee nearby.
So my answer would be a "I am a Sequoia Tree" and I was named after "William T Sherman"

Edit - There is a sequoia tree named the Robert E. Lee, but I can find no source to verify that any other sequoia is named for a friend of his.

I found 2 sequoia trees located in 2 separate parks in California (50 miles apart), the General Grant Tree - the General Sherman Tree. I assume since General Ulysses Grant's tree was named 1st in 1867 - the answer would be him, while General William Sherman's tree was named in 1879, and is slightly larger than Grant's.

General Sherman, a giant sequoia located in the National Park Service's Giant forest in Tulare County, California. The tree is named for William T. Sherman (1820-1891).
