I was born on Dec. 11, 1831. In July 1863 I lived with my family in Gettysburg on Chambersburg Street. I kept a detailed diary of the battle and what I saw in its aftermath as I helped the wounded. I was somewhat lost to history when in 1948 Walter Cronkite talked about me in his "You Are There" series. Later, Ken Burns would bring me into national prominence through his epic Civil War series. I am grateful to be remembered almost 107 years after my death. Who am I?

Sallie Robbins Broadhead, a teacher in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, lived on the western end of Chambersburg Street in the end unit of a row house called Warren's Block with her husband Joseph and 4-year-old daughter Mary. Sallie, a thin, plain-looking young woman, kept a daily diary from mid-June to mid-July 1863, providing a graphic firsthand account of the ordeal endured that summer by the civilians of Gettysburg.
