Edit - The expedition to Florence, SC was sent before Sherman crossed the Pee Dee, not after.

From Cheraw, General Sherman planned to head towards Fayetteville.

Fayetteville, North Carolina at least according to this article: "Sherman's intent was to cross the PeeDee, then cross the Lumber, and then reach Fayetteville and the Cape Fear River. Either there or somewhere beyond, he'd reestablish supply lines for the final push which he hoped would end the war". It didn't hurt that there was an arsenal in the town.

Sherman feinted towards Charlotte, NC, but he moved to his intended target of Fayetteville.

Per this historical marker, three different locations in North Carolina were the immediate destination:

Per http://rchs-nc.net/2015/03/16/civil-war-skirmish-union-troops-overrun-confederates-in-rockingham/, Sherman was traveling with the 15th Corps. The ultimate destination was Goldsboro, NC. The question doesn't specify whether it calls for the immediate or ultimate destination, which is why I have listed both.

On March 5, 1865, Major-General William T. Sherman gave marching instructions for his wing commanders for movements beyond the PeeDee River to the next major objective – Fayetteville, North Carolina. Writing from Cheraw, Sherman outlined the scheme of maneuver to Major-General Henry Slocum of the Left Wing:


Let General [Jefferson C.] Davis lead into Fayetteville, holding the Twentieth in support with the cavalry on his left rear. I will hold General Howard back, but close enough to come up if Joe Johnston wants to fight. I will now fight him if he dares, and therefore wish to act on that idea, keeping each corps ready to hold the enemy if he appears in force on your left, but his strength must be developed before other corps are called from their roads.

Sherman crossed the Pee Dee at Cheraw, South Carolina March 2-3, 1865, en route to Fayetteville, North Carolina, which he reached March 11, 1865.

Sherman's army entered North Carolina in stages, with Sherman accompanying his 15th Corps. The 15th Corps crossed the Pee Dee River at Cheraw on March 6 and marched in a direct route for the town of Fayetteville, following the path of the 17th and 20th Corps.

I found another reference for my answer: "The Civil War in North Carolina", by John G. Barrett (page 297) states: "On the day before the skirmish at Rockingham, General Sherman had crossed the Pee Dee at Cheraw (March 8th) and had all of his army marching for Fayetteville, North Carolina, approximately 70 miles northeast," although there appears to be lots of damage the army was doing to its way north including damage to trains and the factories between the Pee Dee and Fayetteville that were making turpentine, rosin and tar from the pine forrest that was between the 2 destinations. He would occupy Fayetteville on March 11th.

Edit - I will also accept Goldsboro, NC. According to this source, Sherman's plan was to get to Goldsboro by March 15. Fayetteville was on the way to Goldsboro, so either of those can be viewed as a destination.

Several players answered Cheraw, SC, but Cheraw is the place where Sherman crossed the Pee Dee, and he had to go through Cheraw before he could cross the river, so Cheraw cannot be considered a destination that he was trying to reach after crossing it.
