Born William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody, 26 February 1846 - 10 January 1917 was an American scout, bison hunter, showman. What was his relationship to the Civil War?

He served for the Union from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865

During the Civil War, Cody served first as a Union scout in campaigns against the Kiowa and Comanche, then in 1863 he enlisted with the Seventh Kansas Cavalry, which saw action in Missouri and Tennessee.
 
In 1863 at age 17, he enlisted as a teamster with the rank of private in Company H, 7th Kansas Cavalry and served until discharged in 1865. (Wikipedia)
 
he served in the 7th Kansas Cavalry. enlisted in 1863, and served until being dischsrged in 1865 (he was refused enlistment earlier, as he was too young).
