Henry Heth and Winfield Scott Hancock shared a meal with Winfield Scott. Hancock was served potatoes and proceeded to mash them with his fork. Heth teased Hancock about it for the next 30 years.

Search results provided nothing. So I am purely speculating that Armistead and Hancock were the 2 future Generals and the food was beans.

How many of us have stories to tell and were "teased" about eating beans? I know I was. Plus they were good friends and they had to share some meals.

Can't wait to see what this answer is. At lease I tried, I was going to guess Gatling on a prior question but the # of patents fooled me. So I am guessing from now on!

For those that visit Gettysburg, make sure you check out the "Friend to Friend" monument (Armistead handing watch to Bingham). It is a very poignant monument.

I remember reading about this incident and something in the far recesses of my memory is saying the food was mashed potatoes, but I can't remember which two future generals were involved.

Edit - I read through the chapter of Sherman's memoirs to which the link provides access. While it mentions Fremont and Scott, I can't find any place where it mentions a dinner involving the three men.

Generals Winfield Scott Hancock (USA) and General Henry Heth (CSA).

General Winfield Scott - He served them potatoes that were sent by a friend in New Jersey claiming "the finest potatoes in the United States". Well Hancock liked to mash his potatoes, which shocked his namesake and Heth ate his potato the way his host did. Heth never forgot and reminded Hancock later in life of the incident
