I joined the first of those to rebelled against the rebellion. While treating my wounded Colonel I became the Colonel myself. Fighting to keep the mountains and valleys free I commanded one of those crooked divisions when I fell mortally wounded under the trees in 1864.

Joseph Thoburn (April 29, 1825 – October 19, 1864) was born in the district of Mallusk north of Belfast, County Antrim, to be found in the modern-day borough of Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland, UK. He went on to be a physician and soldier from the state of West Virginia who served as an officer and brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was killed in action in the Shenandoah Valley at the Battle of Cedar Creek.

Patrick Ronayne Cleburne.

Edit - Cleburne fits with some of the facts stated in the question, but not all. He was the originally elected colonel of the 15th Arkansas and did not replace any previous colonel. And though the question was a bit garbled, he did not "rebel against the rebellion," but stuck with the Confederate side from beginning to end.

Thoburn commanded one of the divisions of the Union VIII Corps. During the summer of 1864, the Corps commander was Maj Gen George Crook, therefore, I believe, the reference to "one of the crooked divisions?"
