I was born in Ireland, moved to the north and moved to the south. I, who was educated to treat the sick and wounded, did exactly that when the civil war began. I joined the first of those to rebelled against the rebellion. While treating my wounded Colonel I became the Colonel myself. Fighting to keep the mountains and valleys free I commanded one of those crooked divisions when I fell mortally wounded under the trees in 1864.

Patrick Ronayne Cleburne.

Edit - Cleburne fits with some of the facts stated in the question, but not all. He was the originally elected colonel of the 15th Arkansas and did not replace any previous colonel. And though the question was a bit garbled, he did not "rebel against the rebellion," but stuck with the Confederate side from beginning to end.

Question submission credit.

By the way and aside from the official policy: I have no problem if anyone contacts me about the questions I submitted. Be it further questions, comments, misunderstandings or just telling me that I am an annoying idiot - if you have something to say don´t hesitate to start a new conversation with me ... I´m not too busy and welcome all trade of words. Of course it will not influence the scoring and I´ll possibly not answer till the question is officially over.

Col Joseph Thoburn, 1st West Virginia Infantry (US)
Thoburn commanded one of the divisions of the Union VIII Corps. During the summer of 1864, the Corps commander was Maj Gen George Crook, therefore, I believe, the reference to "one of the crooked divisions?"
