"I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes."

. Who was the author of the above quote?

2. Name the person to whom the author referring.

3. Name the speech about which the author was referring.

The author was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg - Edward Everett. His speech was 2 hours long and then President Lincoln spoke a few minutes. Everett would write to Lincoln the above quote regarding those famous 272 words in what is now known as the Gettysburg Address.

Edward Everett was the author of that quote.
He was referring to President Abraham Lincoln.
The speech was Lincoln's immortal Gettysburg Address.

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here. Well he got that part wrong! If I could go back in time for one Civil War event, I would pick November 19,1863. After all these years, I still get goosebumps when I read the Gettysburg Address.
