Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth President, loved cats and could play with them for hours. When asked if her husband had a hobby, Mary Todd Lincoln replied, "cats." President Lincoln visited General Grant at City Point, Virginia in March of 1865. The civil war was drawing to a close and the enormous task of reuniting the country lay ahead, yet the President made time to care for three orphaned kittens. Abraham Lincoln noticed three stray kittens in the telegraph hut. Picking them up and placing them in his lap, he asked about their mother. When the President learned that the kittens' mother was dead, he made sure the kittens would be fed and a good home found for them.

Don't know if she thought them his favorite hobby, but I found dozens of sources that Mary Lincoln first thought of cats when asked if her hubby had a hobby...

So my answer is: cats

Cats can do many things -- they can mew and purr, they can bristle and scratch, they can ""yawn right in your face"", but ever since Abe Lincoln died they have lost the ability to laugh. For as legend has it, Abe Lincoln's favorite hobby was cats, and apparently the cats knew it.

Although ...

"However, Lincoln's favorite hobby was reading"

:D

Reminds me once more of @War Horse 's thread "I read it on the internet" ...

(Just read it again. Definitely worth the time ...)

Revision: May I please revise my rather smirky previous answer?

CATS
As legend has it, Abe Lincoln's favorite hobby was cats, and apparently the cats knew it. Each time he told a funny story, whether on an Illinois farm, in his own modest home or in the White House, the kitten on his lap would stretch her face into a broad smile. Even during the somber days of the Civil War Lincoln found time for his favorite creatures.....
