Question
I was born in over seas in 1839. I volunteered for the U. S. Army, recruiting a company of infantry. I was among the 12,000 men captured in September 1862. I saw action on the 3rd Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, defending Cemetery ridge. In late 1863, I was assigned command of the 9th U.S. Colored Troop regiment. I was promoted to colonel for my meritorious service at the Siege of Petersburg. After the war, I joined the Freedmen's Bureau, and I founded an institute that was meant to be a place where black students could receive post-secondary education.
Who am I?
Where was I born?
What was the name of the school I founded?

Had to dig around a little for the answer but it looks like Samuel C. Armstrong is who you're referring to. He was born overseas as you mention but his birthplace is now in the U.S. Wailuku, HI. The institute he founded would become "Hampton University."

Edit - Correct, Texas Yank. Welcome to the trivia game.

Hope you'll come back and play again.
