Raphael Semmes

Raphael Semmes (September 27, 1809 – August 30, 1877) was an officer in the Confederate navy during the American Civil War. Beforehand, he had been an officer in the United States Navy from 1826 to 1860.
During the American Civil War, Semmes was captain of the commerce raider CSS Alabama, which took 65 prizes. Late in the war, he was promoted to rear admiral and also served briefly as a brigadier general in the Confederate army. Semmes is the only North American to have held both ranks simultaneously.

(His parole, issued to him in his capacity of Brigadier General, was a part of the legal case against him being detained after the war, according to his memoirs. While his memoirs are quite partisan at times, Semmes was also a very able lawyer, and I see no reason to disbelieve his statement about the parole.) (Semmes was eventually released without charges being filed.)

In June 1865 Raphael Semmes was promoted to Admiral and was put in command of the James River Squadron that was protecting Richmond. He was forced to burn his ships upon the Union advance towards Richmond. President Jefferson Davis appointed Admiral Semmes a Brigadier General. Admiral/Brigadier General Semmes surrendered with Joseph E. Johnston at Durham, North Carolina.
