As the Colonel waited for his regiment to form up for the attack, he looked out over the open plain towards the objective; a sunken road and wall at the base of the heights beyond. The army had attacked across this same ground only some five and a half months ago but failed to take the enemy position; the attack was a disaster. Fewer Rebels were there now than were there then, but it would still be a tough fight.
Calling the regiment to attention, the Colonel gave them their assault orders: "Boys, you see those Heights. You have got to take them. You think you cannot do it, but you can and you will. When the signal 'Forward' is given, you will start at double-quick, you will not fire a gun — and you will not stop until you get the order to halt. You will never get that order."
The attack was made, and this time, the sunken road, the wall and the heights were taken.
Question 1: Who was the Colonel who gave the assault orders ?
