I was a Confederate cavalry commander. After the war, I was involved in a salacious scandal involving bigamy (my own), theft of railroad bonds, and theft of a pair of binoculars (!). The ignominy of the scandal led me to flee to London, England, where I died in 1897.

Who Am I and What was the name of the young lady who thought that she had legally married me?

Philip Dale Roddey (1826-1897) swindled Ms. Carlotta Frances Shotwell. Ms Shotwell documented her version of the scandal in her book, A General Betrayal: The Sufferings and Trials of Carlotta Frances Roddey.
