I agree, no joke. I didn't recognize most of them, but I think Frreemasonry and some of the similiary "secret societies" deliberately chose names that sounded wild and over-the-top because they were trying to be mystical and special and fun for the members. I mean, which sounds cooler to join, the Tuesday Evening Social Club and Charitable Foundation, or the Grand Circle of the Ancient Mystic Challice Knights?

Yet their actual actvities, minus some fun with swords and initiation rites, might be about the same. It's why such secret societies always had to tread a fine line between presenting a public face of a secret network with far-reaching tentacles into the highest realms of power, and then when that gets them in too much trouble (the antebellum anti-Masonic party and related fear for example) backpeddle and present themselves as just a benign social group trying to promote fellowship and good works.

Very interesting. I'm somewhat of a graver but have not seen most of those but then where I live we don't have a lot of CW veterans. Woodsmen of the World are well-represented here though so I knew that one. Many of their stones are carved to look like trees so that appeals.

Note I have never verified this but some grave stones probably have U.S.C.G. = United States Coast Guard.

UDC = United Daughters of the Confederacy

These grave stone abbreviations are some I know of and because I am not really an expert on this subject I am sure I missed some abbreviations and any omissions are not intended to be a slight on that person or association.
