Is This A Painting?

Anyway,I stand by a B&W photo of a detail of a well rendered photo. It is quite convincing and I would say it could definately hoax someone not as well -versed as we in period photography

I know,no photographs, but i keep thinkn how accurate Chapman was on the Hunley and am hoping that the one drawing i am thinking of is as good a record.

At any rate, the lack of Photgraphic records of the Va,I can kinda understand, but the Monitor? Was She too busy between the time she was put in the water til she sank? One of the most famous ships of the war?

Astounding, isn't it? Even with photos taken aboard her... none of the entire length of the vessel.

Asolutely LOVE this drawing and always have.I just dont feel right reproducing it for my own sketchbook, hehe.dunno why.Havent they been looking for the wreck of Va for a long time, unsuccessfully?

Oh absolutely! There must have been tons of oppurtunity and one wonders how that got overlooked.Every other monitor"class" ship was styled after her.Its crazy.Like the total lack of Confederate Commanders in the field.Except one of Lee at petersburg.

The one where Lee is riding a horse?

The lack of good images of Virginia is the greater loss. Many, many of Ericsson's original drawings for Monitor (above) are preserved at the Stevens Institute; there's very little on Virginia.

Yes.that is the only war time photo taken of a confederate general ,that I am aware of,actually "in the field"
Yeah I haven't seen any either, it's sort of sad.

It mystifies the other Generals, and I wonder if we'd think the same way if we'd seen them working in the field.

That was what i was trying to relate about the above drawing. That we can only hope it is as accurate as Chapmans painting of Hunley.

Well there quite a few post-war shots of some, like Longstreet, and one i know of of Fitz Lee(crushing the poor horse,by that time),and some more of Lee.It makes me wonder how long this photographer hung around in Petersburg hoping for this one rare and fortunate shot.
I have been on the same street, but dont really know the precise location.

Hey Mark,I'm not to familiar with the Monitors activities between Hampton Roads in '62 and Cape Hatteras, but where would have been a good spot to have gotten a full image? The Lincoln conspirators were photographed on her, correct?

The Lincoln conspirators were held aboard the Passaic-class monitor Montauk.

The Monitor spent the summer of 62 sweltering in a Virginia summer up the James River, supporting the Peninsula Campaign. A photographer came aboard while she was on the James, and all scenes aboard her were taken at that time. Why the photographer didn't take a full-length photo of the vessel is utterly beyond me (unless he did, and it didn't come out, or something)...

Not wanting to sound stupid,I ended up sounding stupid.I just didnt bother to really look up the date of her floundering.Yes It is beyond belief that a photographer would not take a complete image of the famous lady!

One thing that mystifies me is why no pictures were taken of Forrest on his famed war horse King Philip. King Philip was certainly handy - he grazed in the lot in front of the general's house in Memphis and bit unwary Union soldiers! The men always wanted to see the horse they called Iron Grey at the reunions - you'd think someone would take a photo.

Yes, someone - at some point - should've takena photograph, anywhere during the war or after it; It boggles me.

Seems odd, doesnt it?A mounted photo of Forrest even POST_WAR would be a treasure!
