Just purchased which was apparently a cartridge box belonging to this soldier and used to be in Gettysburg museum in 1940's before sold privately. Seller said he was 11th PA but I can only find him under 141 company G and apparently killed at Gettysburg in Peach Orchard. I've tried getting more info on him and see some "Hanford Whitaker" references without the Samuel. Any info anyone can help me with? Any pix of him?

Thnx

Thought the defining bit of information provided for him was that he was KIA at Gettysburg on Jul. 2.

Accordingly, believe he might be Pvte. Samuel Hanford Whitaker (1843-1863), Co. G, 141st PA Infantry who was kia at Gettysburg on Jul. 2, '63. (See https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/31103352/samuel-hanford-whitaker ).

In 'History of Pennsylvania Volunteers 1861-65', by Samuel Bates, his entry appears on the roster of Co. G, 141st PA (@p.457) as:-

...'Pvte. Manford Whitaker m/i Aug. 25, '62 and kia at Gettysburg on Jul. 2, '63'...

I'd suggest the seller misconflated a '1' and '4'

A large proportion of officers and men re-entered the service in various Pennsylvania organizations.

Source: Bates, Samuel P. (Samuel Penniman), 1827-1902.: History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5; prepared in compliance with acts of the legislature, by Samuel P. Bates.

I could be wrong but that looks like a 1864 model cartridge box. A cartridge box that would have been present at Gettysburg would have had a plate on the flap instead of the raised "U.S." in the leather.

Thankfully did not pay a premium. Knew most early ones had the plates, but took a flier thinking maybe an exception lol

Agree with this suggestion. Thought it quite possible that a transposition error occurred transferring information from one form to another, somewhere along the time-line. Here, '141 PA' was erroneously read/heard as '11 PA'.

Daveover was seller. I did get refund thankfully.
This is another seller name of BallparkRoadDawg87 or whatever, a known forger, fraud, and scammer from SC. He sold a fraudulent ammo belt to a guy who then brought it to the Gettysburg summer show and was selling it. I recognized it, showed him how the guy's listings are all the same and fake, and he reported the seller. Not coincidentally, a week later he switched his seller name and now uses daveover. I hate this guy. He's also now trashing Shiloh Relics in his descriptions, and so I contacted Rafael and he's on it now.

But there's hope… I'm happy to report that the guy at the show he swindled showed me the included paperwork and voila, the scammer's real name was on there. Now I have the info I need.
