Lee's Optimal Re-Organization before Gettysburg (The Extra Brigades)

Do you have a rough lists of the different Depts and the Districts below them around this time period? Or a link to where I can get that information?

Here's the full list, from the OR. See note a for your second question.

This helped immensely TY. What was in the District of West Florida around middle 1863? TY
There was no District of West Florida, lol. Only Middle and East. Western Florida was completely controlled by Union forces. Any Confederate forces raiding into the area would come from the Department of the Gulf at Mobile.

Was this not the district?

Sure, but that district held none of West Florida, similar to how John B. Magruder's District of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona held none of New Mexico or Arizona. The Confederate District of West Florida was then merged (unofficially) into the District of Middle Florida.

Additionally, General Forney was captured at Vicksburg with what can be assumed was the majority of the district. General William M. Gardner commanded the District after Forney's relief, but Gardner commanded from Tallahassee in the District of Middle Florida.

The District of West Florida as organized in 1861 was principally for the defense of Pensacola, under General Braxton Bragg. Bragg was soon relieved, as well known, to send reinforcements to A. S. Johnston's army at Corinth. Col. Thomas M. Jones was placed in command of the remaining forces. After Shiloh, Jones evacuated the city and marched with his remaining forces to join Bragg as well. The Union division that occupied the city took control of the harbor and forts, as well, so there was really no need for Confederate troops to be in the area as there was nothing of value to defend. Confederate forces operated from Tallahassee with small raiding parties, but never again garrisoned western Florida.

Stryker-FYI
Forney was commanding a division of Hebert's & Moore's brigades at the surrender of Vicksburg.
On 11/2063 he is shown as commanding the paroled and exchanged prisoners at Enterprise, Ms.

You're right, that erases that possibility. Not sure what troops would have constituted that district, then.

However, some of these may have been detached regiments from the brigades sent north to Lee, guarding railroad crossings and the like. The 44th NC had served this duty for over a year before moving to Richmond.

Two weeks after Lee moved into Virginia, the Siege of Charleston began. To counter the threat, the Confederate troops were reinforced by Colquitt's, Clingman's, Wise's, Evans's, Taliaferro's (from GA), and G. T. Anderson's brigades. Colquitt's and Clingman's brigades could only be moved from North Carolina because the four brigades you have going to Lee were extended to cover their territory in North Carolina (mostly Corse's brigade, sent to Hill). Without those troops in that territory, it is unlikely Colquitt and Clingman would be sent, which presents a problem to Charleston's safety.

Along with the detachments from the ANV (cavalry and the Second Corps guards at Winchester), these forces would be guarding the Shenandoah:

Echols commands the 22nd VA, and the 23rd and 26th VA Battalions
Williams commands the 4th, 10th, and 13th KY Cavalry, 16th GA Cavalry Battalion, 1st Tennessee Cavalry, and 64th Virginia
Wharton commands the 30th VA SS Battalion, 45th VA, and 51st VA
McCausland commands the 36th, 60th, and 63rd VA
Jackson commands the 19th and 20th VA Cavalry
Gen. A. E. Jackson commands the Thomas Legion and SW VA reserves
Also present are the 8th and 21st Virginia Cavalry, the 13th Virginia Artillery Battalion, and seven light batteries.
Was going through my spreadsheet. Is the 63rd virginia the same 63rd virginia that fights at Chickamauga?

Some of the Florida battalions could be moved to reform the brigade.

Infantry: 31
(6) 1st FL Battalion
(6) 2nd FL Battalion
(8) 4th FL Battalion
(7) 6th FL Battalion
4 Independent Companies

Cavalry: 32
(10) 2nd FL Cavalry
(9) FL Cavalry: Ltc Charles James Munnerlyn (Formed in 1864)
(5) 3rd FL Battalion
(8) 5th FL Battalion

Artillery: 4
(Milton; A) Dunham
(Milton; B) Abell
(Leon; A) Gamble
(Leon; B) Villepigue

I'd move the 1st, 2nd & 4th Battalions to Lee to form the 9th & 10th FL regiments. Maybe move a cavalry battalions and one of the artillery batteries.
I had a GG Grandfather in the 2nd Florida Cavalry and was present at Olustee. I am all for moving him to the ANV!!!

This is my current situation in FL, as Lee begins his invasion of the North. I've brought the Western FL brigade back to FL, as well as Perry's ANV FL brigade. I've reinforced both brigades to above 1500 men each, and idea is that spending the rest of the summer in FL will allow them to recruit back up to strenght a bit more, they can also be pulled up to SC to help with the Siege of Charleston. When Lee returns from invasion, Lee could reinforce AoT with Longstreet's corps as in real life, but then the FL brigades could be brought in to bolster the other two ANV corps. I've also shifted Archer's TN brigade to E. TN to help it recruit and give it some time to recover as it was getting close to going under 1K Troops.

For Those interested here is what I have for each Confederate Dept. In this "optimal re-organization"

DEPT. OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA
  • McLaws has been shuffled out west. After Chancellorsville, Lee lost faith in McLaws. This led to Lee "orderding" Longstreet to keep McLaws on a short leash. This ultimately ruined their relationship, and caused his departure by the end of the year. In this scenario, Longstreet convinces McLaws to take a divisional command out west, once McLaws doesn't get one of the two corps commands, this also give the AoT another very dependable division commander, and gives McLaws the possibility of moving into corps command, not that I think he would of been great at that.
  • Kershaw has assumed McLaws division as in real life. Kershaw is the ranking brigade commander in the division, and was one of the best brigade commanders in the army, and was extremely dependable. Now, One could argue that Wilcox could get the division, but I kept the choice in house. Just because their are no alabama troops in this division, I think he would of been viewed as an outsider. I'm willing to listen if those who want to make the case. I know Wilcox is basically next in line for division command by seniority, and he's a west pointer.
  • Corse is attached to Pickett's division as historically, and will also be making the move North with the army. This gives Pickett four brigades, and over 7k men.
  • Micah Jenkins' SC Brigade has also been moved back into the army. It was originally part of Pickett's division, but it's the only non-VA brigade in that division, and doesn't really fit with the others. I've moved it to Hood's division, though the smarter move may be to move it to Kershaw's as their was emnity between Law and Jenkins, whereas Kershaw has defnite seniority, and being a south carolinian may be able to get the most out of the command. I just thought it would fit well as a hard hitting brigade under Hood. I think under Hood their won't be any issues.
  • Pegram is now in charge of Smith's brigade. Smith, has been convinced that since winning the governorship, it would be foolish to risk his life in battle. Pegram has been brought over from East Tennessee and assumed command of the brigade. He has both of his other regiments that were gone from Gettysburg attached to his command, that were off guarding prisoners from Winchester, giving him
  • Avery's/Hoke's brigade has been significantly reinforced with the two north carolinian regiments that were originially in Steuart's command. This strengthens this brigade, and gives more homogeneity to the army.
  • Steuart's Brigade has been reinforced by the four regiments originally designated as Field's/Heth's brigade. Those regiments were under a colonel, AND Heth has been promoted, so their is no one in line to take the brigade, on top of the fact it's is understrengthed. I have disbanded the 22nd VA Battalion and redistributed those units into the other understrengthed regiments. Steuart has 1600+ ment all from Virginia. His MD batallion has been detached and sent back to richmond, part of the exchange of troops that gets the ANV the brigades of Corse/Jenkins/Cooke/Ransom.
  • Rodes never wanted O'neal to take his AL Brigade. In this scenario he convinces Lee to promote Cullen Battle to BG and to take command of the vaunted brigade.
  • Ramseur's hard hitting outfit has been reinforced with the NC regiment from Davis. This large 650 man regiment gives Ramseur's smaller outfit much more punching power in the upcoming battle. This also creates another all NC unit instead of Davis's mixed unit.
  • The Florida brigade in Anderson's division is extremely small. I've sent it back to FL to recruit, as well as reinforce it with some FL Batallions down there. It can also be called on to help defend Charleston if necessary. This leaves Anderson with his four larger brigades.
  • Heth's division is formed how Lee originially envisioned. With the Pettigrew and Davis being added to Ransom and Cooke's NC Brigades. This creates a 3 NC Brigade + 1 MS Brigade. THis is the largest division in the army, as Cooke, Ransom, and Pettigrew are very large, having been in NC for a while.
  • Lastly, Pender commands the Light Division. Heth's old brigade has been sent to merge with Steaurt's brigade, while the TN Brigade has been sent to E. Tennesse for the summer to recruit and help defend that department. It can be called back in the fall or attached to any ANV troops that get sent west in the Fall.
  • Lastly, Stuart's Cavalry has been formed into a full corps. This should of happened before the campaign. Doing so would of made Stuart's operation much smoother. I've called up some more SC cavalry. Sent Jenkins back to the valley, and sent Robertson down to NC to take control of two other NC regiments down there. With DH Hill being moved out west, I think Lee could get rid of Robertson easier without Hill holding up the switch. Stuart has divided his command into four divisions. Hampton has taken the SC, GA, and MS regiments, while Fits Lee and WFH Lee take the two VA divisions of VA brigades. Now WHF Lee if he gets wounded at Brandy Station would most likely have Chambliss cover until he is well and gets exchanged. Lastly, Jones commands both his and Imboden's brigade. Jones hasn't been promoted to MG yet, though I could see a scenario with him getting promoted and leading his two brigades to the valley and taking command of valley forces there going forward.

  • You'll notice that Braxton Bragg commands the Dept of SC, GA, and FL. I've moved Bragg to SC to handle this larger department. Bragg was always good at drilling troops and seemed fine in corps command. This type of department will lend better to his command style then the AoT. Also felt like a full General was needed in the department considering it encompasses four different districts.
  • Obviously SC district is going to come under heavy pressure as the siege of Charleston begins in July. Currently there are 9350 men in SC, There is the equivalent of 2 full brigades + a lot of artillery and some heavy artillery that can act as infantry in the district, as well as other unattached units.
  • In NC, Whiting can send some of Ransom's Division to assist, while in Florida, Bragg can call up Perry's and Finley's reinforced FL brigades. Lastly, in GA Mercer's brigade can be brought in as well. All told if necessary, Bragg can concentrate Evans, Hagoods, Clingman's, Colquitt's, Martin's, Mercer's, Perry's, and Finley's Brigades near Charleston. That's nearly 15k men. That's not even counting all of the artillery or other cavalry units currently in the Department.
  • Between NC, Richmond, and SC,GA, and FL the Confederacy has roughly 36,000 men they can shuffle back and forth to meet any crisis that could unfold while Lee's "reinforced" army is moving North.

  • I've made some major changes to the Army of Tennessee, as you can see.
  • First off, we've got PGT Beauregard in command of the Army of Tennessee. There obviously aren't alot of options to consider in leading the Army of Tennessee. You have Bragg, Johnston, Beauregard, and the senior corps commander in all armies is Longstreet. That's really it. I went with Beauregard for a few reasons. Firstly, historically he does well at Charleston, and then later up at Petersburg. He led offensives at First Bull Run and at Shiloh. I'm not here to necessarily debate whether those were great plans, but he at least shows competancy. The reality is that Bragg can't get along well enough with the corps commanders, and if you move Johnston here, I'm sure he would keep the army together, but I'm not sure he would be aggressive enough to advantage of any mistakes by Rosecrans. Tullahoma was a very good maneuver by Rosecrans, but on the flip side Bragg made major mistakes. Reinforcing the army to 50K men gives Beauregard an opportunity to meet Rosecrans at somewhat parity.
  • As for the corps commanders. The easiest and healthiest move for the Army of Tennessee is shuffling out Polk. Polk is a cancer in the army, on top of not being really good at much of anything. I've appointed D.H. Hill to command Polk's Corps. Most here will know of Hill's strengths and weaknesses. I'm hoping that considering they cooperated quite well historically between their departments, that Hill work solidly for Beauregard. I've kept Hardee as the other corps commander. I don't necessarily think Hardee really ever shown out at any battle, but he is solid, and again hopefully bringing in Bearegard and providing solid leadership will do wonders for the army.
  • I've moved most of the artillery batterys from their brigades and turned them into artillery battalions under divisional command. I've considered taking a battery from each and making a artillery reserve, but have not done so yet.
  • In Hill's Corps, D.H. HIll has Cheatham's Tennessee Division, which has been reinforced by Bushrod Johnson's TN Brigade bringing the division up to 6600 men. This is a competant division with solid brigade commanders especially with Strahl and Maney. Cheatham was always a hard hitting divisional commander. I've moved John K. Jackson's Georgia brigade to McLaw's division, while as I mentioned earlier bringing in Bushrod Johnson's brigade.
  • Next Hill has Lafayette McLaws as a division commander. I've created a four brigade division for McLaws composed of two Georgian brigades for the Georgian divisional commander. These include Claudius Wilson's brigade, as well as John K. Jackson's brigade mentioned above. On top of that you have S.R. Gist's very good brigade of South Carolinians, and finally Arthur Manigault's Alabamians. I think this division could be one of the best in the army, and is led by the competant McLaws.
  • Lastly we have WHT Walker's Division. Walker still has his Texans under Ector as well as Gregg's Tennesseans. Originally the division also included Gist and Wilson, but those Georgians have been given to McLaws to compensate for their loss I've combined what's left of Walker with the rest of Hindman's division of Patton Anderson and Zach Deas. I'm not very high on Hindman, and Walker, while abrasive is a hard hitter, and dependable in divisional command. This gives Hill three hard hitting divisions with no brigade commander that I feel is lacking.
  • For Hardee's Corps he has the talented and dependable combination of Stewart and Cleburne, with Breckinridge's division reinforcing the corps.
  • A.P. Stewart still has his original 3 brigades of Bates, Brown, and Clayton. I've done some major reshuffling of regiments. Bates, a Georgian, now commands and all Georgian brigade. The 58th AL has been moved to S.A.M. Wood's brigade, while the 15/37th TN and 20th TN has reinforced Bushrod Johnson's Brigade. To compensate for their losses Bates has been reinforced with 1st and 32nd GA from District of Georgia, and the 55th Georgia from E. Tennessee. Brown retains his historical brigade, while Clayton retains his historical three alabama regiments plus the 41st Alabama from Helm's brigade. This keeps Helm's brigade as all Kentuckians, and Clayton as all Alabamians. Lastly with Wither's resigning I sent Walthall's brigade to join Stewart giving him four brigades. Deas and Anderson to Walker, and Manigault to McLaws.
  • Cleburne's Division contains all the regiments he had historically around this time plus some reinforcements. Thomas Churchill has been sent back to the Trans Mississippi, so Deshler commands the Texas Regiments. He has been reinforced by Granbury's 7th TX. St. John Liddell commands his historical brigade + the 19/24th AR. Lucious Polk also commands his historical brigade. Lastly Cleburn has S.A.M Wood's Alabama/Mississippi brigade. This is one of the best divisions in the army, all I've done is some slight reshuffling of regiments to make the brigades more homogenous.
  • Lastly, Hardee has Breckinridge's divisions. I've added the other Kentucky brigade under Preston who was in E. Tennessee to this division. That gives the two Kentucky brigades that are in the army of Tennessee to a Kentuckian in Breckinridge. On top of that he has Adam's LA brigade which he had historically but reinforced by some other LA Regiments/Battalions, basically all the LA troops in the Army of Tennessee. Lastly, he has Stovall's brigade. The Florida troops have been sent back to FLorida, while he's been reinforced by the 46th GA, 64th Georgia from the District of Georgia, and the 8th Georgia Battalion. This gives him an all Georgia unit.
Lastly, we have the cavalry. I've made a lot of similar moves that were made historically just a little bit quicker. You have Wheeler and Forrest's Cav Corps. I did move Pegram to Virginia to take over for Smith.

- Why not consolidate the two Kentucky brigades? The total would be easier to manage. Preston is an administrator, not a soldier, so his skills would be better spent in East Tennessee.
- 22nd Tennessee Cavalry is now only known as 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Battalion, and is still in north Mississippi under James Chalmers
- 40th AL and 43d MS Battalions, having been part of Pemberton's army, most likely should remain with Loring in Mississippi;
- I would suggest consolidating Wilson's and J. K. Jackson's brigades under the latter, replacing the 40th AL Bn with the 5th and 8th MS, and consolidating the GA Sharpshooter battalions.
