Hi all.

I didn't go to the Franklin Show but I'd love to see what y'all brought back from it. Anyone that knows me will tell you to POST LOTS OF PICTURES!

I know of one model55 1858 Harpers Ferry rifle musket that left Dallas and went to the show. If it comes back I'm buying it. Fingers crossed.

Sure thing. That item is an eagle hardee hat badge. It was a regulation piece that officers had to put on their hardee hat to pin up the corresponding side to the branch they were in. They are the officer's version of the enlisted stamped brass eagle insignia. This is how it should look when on this style headgear. This is a stock image. They aren't always ovals but are handmade and all very different in design and shapes at times. It's the evolution of some of the eagles used on the 1851 shakos.

My pickups from the weekend. I helped to price a bunch of gun tools for the son of a collector whom was developing dementia. He was surprised when I priced his m1841 wiper at $400- and someone bought it five minutes later. I ended buying an E inspector stamped m1841/1842 US combination tool and T-handle from him.

Nice tool kit. I love the old tools. Would really like an Enfield Sargeant's tool, but they aren't cheap.

Really nice pick ups. That Richmond combo is awesome! I bought several tools and a couple Colt bullet molds from a guy at the recent TGCA show. He had more tools than I've ever seen on one table. He mentioned two different books on the subject but I can't locate them. Any leads?

Gun Tools: Their History and Identification Vol 1 and 2. One really needs both. Vol 1 has a bunch of errors which are corrected in Vol 2. Any clue whom the dealer was at the show? Tool collectors aren't the most common folks in the field.

Unfortunately I don't know. His table was a madhouse and getting his attention for the few things I did pick up was enough. He didn't have biz cards out but I'm hoping I can catch him at the spring show. He had lots of Snider combos, but no Civil War era Enfield tools with him. Thanks for the heads up on the books you mention. Just located it on an old thread. Now to find a set....

I acquired fluted Colt Army number 965, in a trade for a western long gun of relatively equal value. Number 965 has been in collectors' hands a while and gone through auction a time or two. Someone reblued it during that time, but thankfully that has been removed. As I understand it, 965 didn't letter from Colt a decade or so ago, part of a group of 25. I plan to call the Colt archives to see if that is still the case, occasionally new information comes in. There's always hope!

On my short list has been a Model 1861 Springfield Rifle Musket in nice condition. At the show I found one in better condition than I ever expected. I actually had Tim Prince look it over to make sure there were no reproduction parts on it. He gave it a clean bill of health so I came home with it. Unfortunately, it makes the remainder of my collection look, well....rather drab.

I only bought a book, but a couple of my buddies went in big on some post-war rifles:
a) Trap door Springfield
b) Winchester '73
c) 1873 Rolling Block musket in .50-70
