I made a discovery today - I ran across the first minie ball I ever found back in October 1979 at Spanish Fort, AL.
Most collectors can relate. There is one artifact that started it all. Like an addict that remembers his first high or sip of alcohol. However, there has yet to be a cure for this artifact-collecting addiction.
I was invited on a relic hunt to Spanish Fort, but I was more interested in finding the indian artifacts that lay scattered along the ridges and hill sides. That is, until I found this minie ball. It started a 40+ year obsession. One in which has been so enriching and fun, I feel sorry for folks who don't share in this hoarding of history...lol.....Thanks for letting me share.

Your addiction started a lot like mine as finding a CW bullet washed out of the side of the Sunken Road at Shiloh back when I was 13 started me down that road.

Still cheaper and more dignified that golf. Which is the willful misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
I don't know about that as I started playing golf around 6 years old with my Grandfather and played till around 8 years ago but I still relic hunt.:cold:

Now if you could only relic hunt on the golf course!!
Actually I have. When they were clearing the land to build the golf course in Franklin, we found a ton of stuff to include my first dug pistol.

This was my first find in 1961 with a WWII army mine detector. I went with my Dad to an army surplus store in Washington DC to buy the detector. We made the find the next day. We soon found the detector wouldn't pick up led or brass.!!!
