Soldier Photo - Looking for help

Hello. I came a ross this photo yesterday in a box of old photos. Would anyone be able to help identify where this soldier might be from or what rank based on his uniform?

Thank you. That is really great knowledge. I assume if we could see the buttons better it would tell a possible regiment or state?

I wonder if there is any significance to the bugle facing the right. Most images I see the bugle is in the other direction. Also, appears that it may have a 9 in the center?

This is a tintype which is a mirror image of the subject (look at the way the jacket id fashioned). In real life (image flipped vertically):

Because it was a mirror image the buttons, buckles and badges were often 'scrubbed out' to avoid the giggles at the reversed insignia. the other problem with tintype is that they are direct images, not from negatives and the medium often breaks up, cracks or 'blobs' as can be seen on this one. all detail is lost due to this. The cap band is light in color which would indicate it is a light to medium blue color - infantry arm color.

That could be either a 1 (one) or, more likely, an I (India) - the company. (I believe the J (Julliet) was omitted)

Most enlisted men in all branches of the army wore the standard eagle button.

Nice image. You didn't mention, but was the "box of old photos" from a relative? In other words, is this suspected to be a family image? Or did you pick up a box of old photos at an estate sale?

Buttons look like they could be Vermont state seals.

I had posted earlier that the buttons looked like Vermont state seals before I read you had found the photo in Vermont. Now I am 99% certain this is a Vermont private.

I can't be certain due to the distortion but I am pretty dog gone sure the bottom button is Connecticut

I had posted earlier that the buttons looked like Vermont state seals before I read you had found the photo in Vermont. Now I am 99% certain this is a Vermont private.

I posted earlier that the bottom button appears to be Connecticut. You are correct- I was wrong. It's definitely Vermont. Great catch.

Were any of the other photos ID'd? What I'm getting at is do you have any idea if the box was from a particular family? Maybe the box was a group of images from one family? If so, and if other images are ID'd, it might be possible to ID the subject.
