28th Maine, 1862-1863

Hello all

I have done some more familial research and discovered that one of my granduncles, Preston P. Preble, served with the 28th Maine as a private in Company I for the entirety of its existence from October 1862 to August 1863.

Six companies were detached and sent to take part in the Siege of Port Hudson [May 22-July 9 1863] under the command of Nathaniel P. Banks and I am trying to discover if Company I was one of the six. Any help that you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

According to the official records, the detachment headed by Col. Woodman was companies A, D, and E, with parts of F, H, and I.

So your granduncle could have been in the part of I - or could not have. Sorry that's not more helpful!

I'm guessing they would have made a list at the time. If that were still around the place to look would be the Maine State archives. They should at least be able to tell you if they have records for the 28th that might go into that detail.

Preston P Preble was a granduncle to me too. Was looking him up on behalf of a relative. Did you find any more info on his fate with Company I?

You're welcome! The date 1867 doesn't make sense, does it? Do you think it's actually 1861? Does this photo clear things up at all? "Brother and Chum. 1861" I think that's Preston P on the right, don't you?
