On the night of April 14, 1865 I was doing guard duty as sentry on the western end of the Navy Yard Bridge across the Anacostia. Orders were that no one was to cross without the password. Between 10:30 and 11:00 an actor by the name of Booth appeared and told his story of how he lived in Maryland and was unavoidably detained past the 9:00 curfew.Booth was allowed to pass and go "home". Who am I and what was my rank?

1) Your name was Silas Tower Cobb
2) Your rank was Sergeant

Source:

"Booth, who moments before assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater, approached the bridge, however was stopped by Sergeant Cobb. Disregarding orders to not allow anyone to cross after dark, the unsuspecting Cobb thought Booth was a "proper person to pass"

The source listed below indicates that Booth encountered a Sergeant Cross at the bridge. I found other sources that say the sentry's name was Cobb. All the sources I looked at seemed to be in agreement that the sentry was a sergeant.

The question didn't specify that it was asking for first and last name, so I'll say his name was Cross and his rank was sergeant.

Sgt. Silas Tower Cobb, Company F, 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Cobb was in charge of the guard detail for the bridge that night. He was later given an informal dressing down for allowing Booth to cross the bridge after curfew, but did not face any court marshal charges. He was honorably discharged from the army in September 1965. He died by drowning two years later at Grand Haven, Michigan.

Answer: Sergeant Silas T. Cobb
Source: Stewart Sifakis' "Who Was Who in the Civil War", page 130 biography of Cobb, Silas T..

Edit - Since the question did not specify that it was asking for both first and last name, I am giving credit for the answer of Sergeant Cobb. Since I found a source saying that the sergeant's name was Cross, I would give credit for that answer also.
