I'm attempting to locate a 3 x 1st cousin, WILLIAM LAND, born about 1836 in Wilkes County, NC to Hasting & Delilah Knight Land. He is counted there in 1840 and 1850 census. Hasting apparently died after 1850. His widow, two daughters, and youngest son relocated to upper East Tennessee in the mid-1850s. William, (14 in 1850), did not accompany his mother and siblings. For the most part, I have assumed William also passed about the same time as his father, until recently.

In the 1860 census of Terrell County, Georgia, there are three farmhands listed as part of a household headed by a James O. Taylor. All three farm laborers were born in North Carolina, William Land age 24, (born in 1836), R.D. Herrin (Herring), age 23, (born in 1837), and Squire Gorden (Gordon), age 16, (born in 1844).

North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865, A Roster lists the following:

Robert D. Herring A 24-year-old resident of Surry County, NC, enlisted and mustered 5/20/1861 into Company C 21st NC Infantry. He died of disease in Virginia, 9/6/1861.

Squire Gordon A resident of Surry County, NC, a 17-year-old farmer, enlisted 3/27/1862 and mustered 4/30/1862 into Company E 53rd NC Infantry. He died of disease at Raleigh, NC on 5/5/1862.

Surry County, NC lies to the N.E. of Wilkes. In fact the town of Elkin, NC lies in both Surry and Wilkes Counties. It would not be hard to see a 17, 18-year-old William strike out on his own and end up in Surry County. If he's with Robert and Squire in Terrell County, Georgia in 1860, he may have remained there while the other two went back to North Carolina.

Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia 1861-1865:

William H. Land A 27-year-old resident of Terrell County, Georgia. Enlisted and mustered on 3/22/1862 into Company F 51st Georgia Infantry as a Private. He was surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

Could this be my "long-lost" William Land? Paging @Zella and @lelliott19, and anyone familiar with Georgia records.

No my ancestor.
My 2nd Gr-Grandfather was William Tyler Land. I need to go find my resources but I have him being born in Mississippi in 1803 and died in 1850, again in Mississippi. His was son of John Land who was born in S. Carolina in 1768.

I found some family history and another daughter... I think it's confusing a little...

Edith Adeline Land was the wife of your John Martin Justice of Johnson County , Iowa . Edith was my 3 x 1st cousin, born in Wilkes County , NC Oct.8, 1839. She was the 2nd child and oldest daughter of Hasting Land and Delilah Knight. She is mistakenly listed in the 1850 census of Wilkes County as an 11 year-old son named Elias. Her father and oldest brother, William apparently died soon after the 1850 census. A widowed Delilah, Edith, Lucy, and James, came to the Greene / Washington County area of upper east Tennessee in the mid-1850’s. This info comes from James’ Tennessee Confederate pension.John and Edith married on Jan.18, 1859 in Greene County , Tennessee . John was the son of John Justice, (born about 1784 in Virginia ) and Thurzeina Brown ( born about 1795.)Daughters were Nancy, Thursa, and Martha. The youngest child was Alfred. On Sept 18, 1862 John and Alfred enlisted in the Confederate Army’s 61stTennessee Infantry, company A. They both served through the siege of Vicksburg . Alfred was paroled and returned to Tennessee and never rejoined the army. John did, and was captured again Jan 3, 1865 near his home in Greene County . He was sent to Camp Chase in Ohio and held till the spring –early summer of 1865. After the birth of 5 children in Tennessee , they appear in the 1870 census of Johnson County , Iowa in July, 1870. John died there May 8, 1889. Edith died on Feb.28, 1936. Hasting Land was my 2 x great-uncle. Per Glenn Land

I found this on Delilah Knight Land... it a little odd...

Delilah Land (born Knight), 1805 - 1880
Delilah Land (born Knight) was born in 1805, to Thomas Knight and Lucinda Knight (born Stanton).
Thomas was born on December 24 1799, in Wikesboro, North Carolina, USA.
Delilah married Williams R. Hastings Land.
Williams was born in 1808.
They had one daughter: Edith Adeline Justice (born Land).
Delilah passed away in 1880, at age 75.

Here is Hasting Land past... Wonder if Williams was his first name but went by Hasting or is Williams an error.

All my ancestors! I had never seen Hasting's first name as William R.

Hasting apparently died after 1850.
I was unable to locate probate records (will) or estate file for Hasting (or William) Land 1852-1860 in Wilkes County NC. Also, no will for anyone with last name Land in Surry County.

EDIT TO ADD: The records are not indexed so it is possible that I overlooked the Hasting Land probate record. If you'd like to take a look yourself, here are the links for the volumes for the appropriate year ranges
NC Probate Records Wilkes County Wills, 1848-1868, Vol. 05
NC Probate Records Surry County Wills, 1853-1867, Vol. 05

There is a record for Wm Land dated 1869. Don't know if it is related. NC Estate Files, Surry County, Wm Land,1869

Did he have a brother named Elihu Land? Born about 1811, wife named Margaret Wherry? Elihu's son, James C. enlisted in the 51st TN Infantry. He was discharged after the surrender of Fort Donelson (underage). He later joined the 12th TN (Green's) Cavalry. He also had three brothers that probably served. He is standing back row on the left in this photo from "Confederate Veteran" I believe 1907. His service record is part of his pension application. Our lines of the Land family may have been distant cousins. (depending on whose doing the genealogy)

I don't have much on the LAND family. As I said, I need to check my resources.
I have him as the son of John Land(1768-1830). William married Margaret Ramsey.
Their daughter married a Benjamin F. Tucker who joined the 30th Mississippi and died in 1864 in Atlanta. My gr-grandfather married his widow and raised two of the Tucker children.

Dates agree, (1768-1830) Most sources I've seen say he married a Mahulda Ramsey

I didn't follow how you got from William Land to John Land. My Tree didn't have enough people to make the connection and show that Elihu. So I used a Hint and found another user's family tree that has everything that my tree is missing.

William T. Land married Margaret Mahulda Ramsay.
In 1860 Census, Benjamin F. Tucker and Sarah E. (Land) were married and living in Holmes County. Benjamin F. Tucker enlisted in Company A, Neill's Guards, which consisted mostly of men from Black Hawk. Henry A Cole was only 16 and living in Black Hawk. He did not enlist until almost the eve of the Battle of Lookout Mountain.

RED is my lineage. And there is Elihu shown in this Tree as a sibling to William T. Land.

You have my attention now. I will review your original post but doubt that I can answer any of your Q's. But I will be following this.

BTW, the ancestry tree this figure comes from is called Hugheys of SW MS created by westover11. Going up the tree, he has another John Land, Thomas Land, John Land(1690-1729), Curtis Land and to Curtis Land(1635 in England -1683 in Charles County VA, maybe arriving in 1681).

Our lines of the LAND family are probably cousins. How close is debatable? I'm fairly confident in my Land ancestry going back to my 5 x great-grandparents, Thomas Land & Anna Sumter Their line migrated from South Carolina to Western North Carolina. Most Land genealogists say his parents were Thomas Land & Elanor McClanahan. It's here, where our connection, (if any) would probably come in going back to Curtis Land.

I see that Thomas Land(1712-1788) in that tree with Elanor as his wife. I have never researched my LAND family that much. So I'm not much help until you link up with my small tree. My family "genie" was struggling with Henry Cole's mother and we lucked out to discover a genealogist who proved she was a JONES.
