My GGG Uncle Legrand Shockley was KIA during the first battle of Saltville Oct. 2, 1864. His is the rank that I have seen in a few places.Do you have information on what context or time period?
I've seen a few of these peculiar (to modern eyes) ranks (like Captain - Lieutenant) in the 18th Century British Army.
As @67th Tigers said it could also be a brevet rank, Captain in the Regular Army, but brevetted a Colonel of volunteers maybe?

Thank you for this. I guess I need to look into 3 fold. thank you again.Militia and Virginia State Line ranks I think.
In 1864 your GGG was colonel of the 152nd Virginia Militia, that being all the militia from Carroll County. In 1862 the 152nd Virginia Militia fielded a company (b) in Jackson's Artillery Battalion, Virginia State Line. Jackson's battalion was organised in March '62 at Winchester and served until just after the Seven Days. The roster shows he enlisted as a private.
link to canvasI know Radar O'Reily held a "test Rank' of Cpl-Capt during the Korean War, for a brief period while assigned to the MASH 4077. A canvas conducted by Capt B.F. Pierce at an Officers Club in Seoul found that the rank was not favored by the Army Officer Corps so was discontinued and not adopted.
