I’m My Own Doctor
(a song parody to “I’m My Own Grandpa”)

When the war was coming — I had to make a choice.
Kentucky was my home with the Rebels I deploy.
Although I was a doctor — fighting was my skill.
I knew just what was coming — how war is fulfilled.

I found myself with Morgan — riding through the land,
and then I was with Forrest — he was quite the man.
At Chickamauga got hurt — they thought I would die,
when Forrest saw me lying there he was my best ally.

I soon got to a hospital, the doctors gave no help.
I knew that if I was to live — I must do it myself.
A widow women came to me and she would be my nurse,
together we would operate conditions were the worse.

So I bit the bullet as I first began to cut
then I dug my hands - all around my gut.
The perspiration falling down round about my head,
but if I didn’t do this - I would wind up dead.

T’was nothing short miraculous, but is this story true?
or did he just embellish it - I’ll leave that up to you.
He even wrote a book - his stories to regale,
“with Morgan and with Forrest”, - “Four Years" was his tale.

Chorus
I’m my own doctor, I’m my own doctor,
I diced and sliced - to save my life!
I’m my own doctor.

Thomas Franklin Berry, who described his experiences in Four Years With Morgan and Forrest. (Oklahoma City, OK: The Harlow- Ratliff Company, 1914).

The man in question is Dr. Thomas Franklin Berry.
My source is his book, specifically the page labeled "I Operate On My Wounded Bowel." :frantic::eek::O o::sick::sluggish::frog::alien:
https://archive.org/details/fouryearswithmor00berr/page/254

If this story is true, Dr. Berry missed his calling as an action star given to snappy comebacks while wounded. According to the aforementioned page, when the surgeon got snarky with him after his self-surgery, Berry told him, "Doctor, I am not entirely satisfied, but will be as soon as I am well and strong enough to slap your jaws for your insults. I would do so now if I were able, you vulgar puppy." :smoke:
