Civil War Medicine

Can someone please tell me who the men kneeling around with large tassels on their hats are? Shriners or something?

A pretty good short documentary. I enjoyed it a lot. Too the point except for the opening. I figured the picture had to staged. The jackets are on, wearing hats., no table. They don't look like they are really ready to operate. It would be a mess if they did. The video is worth seeing. I hope there will be more of them. Thanks for posting.

I'm not sure if it was ever done in the Civil War, but during the Napoleonic Wars leg amputations were often done with the patient sitting up as the Zouaves are doing. This is for ergonomic reasons - it's easier for the surgeon to operate the knife in this position. The surgeon holds the the blade so the edge is facing his body and cuts in a circular motion from underneath, separating first the skin and then the muscle. Then the bone saw saws through the bone.

I liked it but the colorized image is a little more gruesome!
