Probably Not a Civil War Shell, But. . . .

I found this today while metal detecting in the hopes of locating the site of a Civil War camp: at first I thought it was a small Civil War shell, now I doubt it is.

It is heavy iron, hollow (rounded closed top on one end, hole in the other end), no threads or any other notable features on the interior (at least not that have survived the rust). The object measures about 4.25 inches in length and is 2.62 or 2.75 inches in diameter. (I need some calipers for this hobby!).

Any thoughts?

Thanks for posting. I really don't believe its an artillery shell. I would say its a piece of pipe or some other piece of farming equipment.

Never be too quick to toss farm junk. Some friends found an old plow blade they were ready to toss, then I saw in a local museum that it was from a 19th century plow. I find that worth saving.
