Visiting Gettysburg In A Few Weeks

You might want to consider staying in Frederick for a couple of days while you do the Antietam/Harper's Ferry/Monocay part...then stay in Gettysburg.

That was our first consideration, in fact the room is still booked in Frederick, but we found a place to rent for a week in Gettysburg and really don't want to hop from one place to another. Thanks

Have a great time!!! We may be there Saturday or Sunday of that week. It's that time of the year that we "pop into Gettysburg" as much as we can when we have weekend time off.

I've been there twice. Once in 8th grade and once in 10th. It's a truly special place, and was always very interesting to see where so many boys fought and died.
It's even more special now that I found out this year that one of my uncles (also one of my only notable family members who participated in the Civil War) fought and died there. I'm jealous that you get to visit, I want to see the spot where he died...

Also do visit the Angle where Alonzo Cushing died! He's a very special young man .

I didn't lose any family members there, but my GG Grandafther was taken prisoner at Monocacy just South of there, so we are going there to pay respects since we don't know where he is buried.

And the weather that weekend certainly didn't feel like spring, as there was 20-30 MPH winds (sustained) with gusts up to 40-45 MPH. On those open battlefields it feels a lot more windy since there's nothing to shield you from it. The temps didn't make it out of the 50s either. But the wind or chilly temps didn't stop me from gaining some great battlefield vantage points on the Longstreet tower or anywhere else on the battlefield for that matter. I hope the weather cooperates with you, as spring doesn't want to come and stay here in the Mid Atlantic this year.

It's been unusually chilly here near Springfield, Illinois as well, but we are greened up and the flowers are popping.

The one and only time I was at Gettysburg was during the 150th. What a zoo(in a good way). I spent a week there and most of it was for the GAC event. When we did get a chance to tour it was in spurts. We did the 150th Pickets charge in uniform with the 2-3 thousand other reenactors and 5 thousand tourists. It was great fun to walk the whole field and see the Yankee reenactors manning the stone wall. I took my camera and took several hundred pictures. I chabnged my avatar to me and my buddy and his son standing on the porch of Meads Headquarters. I particularly had thoughts at the railroad cut, what a way to start the tour. I think I have the wife talked into going there next year when we both retire. We are planning it now, and it looks like it may be a camping trip.

Make sure to return to the Gettysburg National Military Park. Try to plan your visit early in the spring or mid-September. This park is better with less humanoids.
