Getting ready to head back to school I have been online studying multiple games and looking through different Civil War computer games and just wondering what ones are the best? I've never owned one before just wondering what ones would be the best to play, have a good time, and pass the time with?

I got the game Empire: Total War and there is a great Civil War mod for it that I play a lot. It has a campaign mode but if you want to jump in and have a quick battle it also has that option. You can put together pretty big battles, zoom in all the way to field level and basically see everything at all angles. They do updates for it pretty often so basically you would just have to get the original game Empire: Total War and then download the free mod. Here is a youtube clip from a battle and there are a lot more on youtube if you search for it.

Definitely "Scourge of War Gettysburg"

It's similar to Total War in that you can fly around the battlefield, move around regiments and brigades, but more slower placed, realistic, and with better AI. You can command anything from a brigade to an army and play out different historical scenarios of Gettysburg. There are also other add-on scenarios of Antietam, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, and a what-if of Pipes Creek.

As mentioned above, there is an ACW mod for both Empire and Napoleon Total War. Those are both great games, but the AI isn't too smart. Both games do have multiplayer, though. Also, you need a pretty good gaming PC to play Total War.

A gameplay video from you tube

Its like Total War if you've ever played that, good graphics for a strategy game, you can zoom in on individual troops, move around regiment and brigades, but a lot more realistic than Total War. You can command anything from a brigade to an army and play out historical scenarios of Gettysburg. There are also other scenarios of Chancellorsville, Antietam, Brandy Station, and a what if of Pipes Creek.

As mentioned above there is an ACW mod for Empire Total War and a mod for Napoleon Total War too. Those are both great games but the AI isn't too smart and even though the graphics are excellent, the bad AI can make the gameplay not so realistic. Although, both games have multiplayer. Also you need a pretty good gaming PC to play Total War. The most recent game in the series is Shogun 2 TW and in September their coming out with Rome 2 TW.

I'll have to check out Scourge of War some time. I have the mod for Empire Total War but don't have Napoleon Total War so never tried the mod for it, although not sure how different it is.

'Civil War II' v1.01 Patch Available NOW
by Rainier on Oct. 23, 2013 @ 10:01 a.m. PDT
Civil War II is a grand strategy game set during the bloody battles of the American civil war.
Get the Civil War II v1.01 Patch off WP (11mb)

The v.1.01 Update fixes some minor bugs in the Terrain, the Maps, Abilities spelled incorrectly and more. New events have been added, such as Indian Home guard units in KS (thanks to Ol'Choctaw), and Texas-Mexico border trade. Overall Gameplay, User Interface and AI have been improved and enhanced.

The main feature of this Update is the Bonus Scenario The West Campaign, featuring the operations of famous generals Grant, Sherman, Johnston and other well-known faces. This campaign lasts 24 turns and is a great stepping-stone for people wanting to prepare for the Grand Campaign!

As stated before, Take Command: Second Manassas and Scourge of War: Gettysburg are both great games. Take Command is cheaper and simpler, but in some ways the simplicity of the game when compared to Scourge of War is what makes Take Command such a good one. I would recommend getting Take Command first, and then, if you like it, look into Scourge of War Gettysburg.

are there any good Civil War games dealing with the Western Theater battles.....Shiloh, Stones River, Vicksburg, or Chickmauga etc?

The John Tiller series includes regimental-level games of Shiloh, Wilson's Creek, Stones River, Prairie Grove, and Chickamauga.

And while the AI part of the game being iffy is a problem, Civil War Generals 2 covers both theaters fairly evenly (the Trans-Mississippi you need to make or find a usermade scenario for, but that's not very hard). I know I've seen fan-modifications for Sid Meier's Gettysburg for Chickamauga, too.

Naming my two favorite Civil War games (Sid Meier's Antietam is probably a better game, or at least no worse, but its a battle I like replaying less).
