Hello all,

Are my thoughts correct that this is a Wisconsin Cavalry Shell jacket? Seen similar a looking one online ID's as Schuylkill Arsenal Cavalry Shell jacket.

I believe the soldier is George W. Tompkins who served with Co. D, 13th WI until being discharged for disability in early July 1862. Then, he reenlisted in May of 1863 into Co. E. 3rd WI. My best guess is he took this photo in his home town of Janesville, WI just after enlisting.

Well, yes, he's wearing a regulation cavalry jacket. I reckon if it is a Wisconsin cavalryman, then what he's wearing is technically a "Wisconsin cavalry" jacket.

But what the garment, in itself, is a US Army 1858 pattern cavalry jacket, either made by the Army's Schuylkill arsenal facilities at Philadelphia, or by one of many wartime government contractors.

During the war the volunteer regiments raised in the States, infantry or cavalry, etc., while serving with the army were supplied with the army clothing of their branch.
