Hi All,
Acquired this interesting relic from a reputable dealer. It was dug at a CW site
in Mississippi. It may possibly be an image
of Alexander the Great. See attached photos. It is two pieces, with the center
oval of the warrior attached with metal tabs
to the stamped metal square. A tab is visible on the backside. There apparently was a metal bar on the back which went from top to bottom. What is left of that now
is only the small pieces of metal held by the
metal pins. These are visible on the back almost in line with the visible tab, right side
in photo. Under magnification you can see
these pieces are broken and jagged and appear to be the top and bottom remnants
of what I'm guessing was a metal bar.
Okay all let's hear what your guess is as to
what this is. The photos with the relic are of
Alexander the Great. My limited research shows there was a Greek volunteer unit
attached to a Louisiana Regiment. Thank you! Jonl51

Could it possibly be a shoulder belt plate?
Not likely, it is too fragile to be a cross plate, a sash was generally made from silk and the plates were very decorative and worn for infrequent dress. Parades, funerals, special occasions, not all were military related, but were forced into that use early war.
